FAQ for Implanters

What protocol are petDetect Trovan microchips?

The Trovan microchips we supply conform to the FDX-B protocols set out in ISO 11784/11785. ISO compliant microchips are programmed with a number that is 15-digits long. The first three numbers denote the manufacturer – our Trovan number is 956. There are then a series of noughts and then 6, 7 or 8 digits. Trovan microchips are ‘read-only’ and are laser programmed so they cannot be re-programmed.

Do other microchip protocols/technologies exist?

Yes there are other microchip technologies that exist - the most common one being FDX-A microchips which are programmed with a number that is 10-digits long. Although most of the world now use ISO compliant microchips, some older pets, especially exotics, or pets imported from the USA may have FDX-A microchips implanted. Many microchip scanners may read FDX-A as well as the FDX-B microchips, however they are generally only capable of reading the Destron/FECAVA FDX-A microchips. Some manufacturers also produce encrypted microchips which cannot be read by many scanners - these may again be implanted in pets from the USA. Notable examples of microchips which require a brand specific, or universal scanner to be read include the Trovan Unique and AVID Encrypted (Friendchip).

Can the petDetect Trovan microchips be used for the Pet Passport Scheme?

Yes, they are perfect for the Pet Passport Scheme. Any scanner capable of reading FDX-B microchips can read them.

Can petDetect Trovan microchips be used in dogs for the purposes of the compulsory microchipping legislation?

Yes, they are compliant with the compulsory microchipping legislation for dogs.

Are your microchips guaranteed?

Yes, of course. In fact, all of our equipment is guaranteed against manufacturing faults. Most of what we sell is made in the UK or in Europe. 

Why should I use petDetect Trovan microchips?

There are now lots of different manufacturers and suppliers of microchips in the UK. However, it is important to note that although they must all comply with the ISO standards, this is not a mark of build or material quality, or even code uniqueness. These remain the responsibility of the manufacturer, and therefore the quality and reliability of the microchips available to implanters can vary greatly.

Trovan have been manufacturing microchips since the 1980s and hold a number of patents for their technologies. Trovan microchips are used worldwide in zoos and wildlife projects due to their proven reliability, especially important when used in long-lived species.

Alongside the quality and reliability of the Trovan microchip, petDetect offer registration with Petlog. Petlog are the largest database in the UK, are managed by the Kennel Club, and are part of a European network of databases so pets can be tracked across Europe. They strive for excellence within the industry, and have lobbied for many changes. They also set up and run National Microchipping Month every June.

For implanters in the Republic of Ireland, petDetect offer registration with the Irish Kennel Club dog identification database, the IKC have been running a microchip database for over 10 years, and they allow for convenient dual registration of pedigree dogs onto both the pedigree register as well as a microchip database simply by completing one form. They are a DAFM compliant database, a full member of EuroPetNet and also allow the registration of non-pedigree dogs.

Do you sell the 8mm mini microchip?
Yes. Implanters can choose to use either the regular 12mm microchip or mini 8mm microchip. Using either one, you can have confidence that any scanner capable of reading FDX-B microchips can read them.

VERY IMPORTANT - Only use the mini microchip with the mini implant gun or syringe - do not use with the regular gun or syringe because the mini microchip has a slimmer and shorter needle.
Scanning techniques are important when attempting to read a microchip - see our guidance on How to scan for a microchip. Remember to hold the reading ‘hot-spot’ on the scanner so that it touches the fur and scan SLOWLY.

Do you use the Petlog database?
Yes! We only recommend the Petlog database for registrations within the UK. Petlog is based in the UK and operates 365 days per year, is the largest in the UK and is managed by The Kennel Club, pets are registered for life and their 24/7 telephone number is 01296 336 579. They are a 'not for profit' organisation. They also defer some of the fees they receive to maintain the database for years to come. Why even consider the others?
For dog registrations in the Republic of Ireland, we recommend the Irish Kennel Club dog identification database. They are DAFM compliant, and accept registrations for both pedigree and non-pedigree dogs. The IKC have been involved with running a microchip database for over 10 years.

What registration options are there for Petlog?
Registration of animals with Petlog can either be completed online, or via filling in a paper form which can be posted to them. All microchips sold by petDetect come with basic lifetime registration onto the Petlog database unless they are intended for use in zoos or wildlife. Online registration is the recommended method. Once you have been setup with an authorised online account with Petlog it is a very easy process. Paper records can still be kept by using our online ‘jotter’ forms available on our downloads page. Microchips sold with paper registration are supplied with Petlog forms that can be filled in and posted to Petlog to process registrations.

What database do you use in the Republic of Ireland?
Under the compulsory microchipping legislation for dogs introduced in the ROI, all databases storing details for microchips implanted in dogs must now be DAFM approved. Petlog are not a compliant database, and so we recommend the Irish Kennel Club database. They are DAFM compliant, have been operating a database for over 10 years, and allow the registration of both pedigree and non-pedigree dogs. Registration is carried out via paper forms which can be sent to the IKC.

I am an implanter - how do I register pet and owner details online with Petlog?
Firstly, if you do not already have an authorised Petlog account, you will need to apply for one by filling in this form.
Once your account has been set-up, you can use this to log-in online to process registrations. 
In order for you to keep records of your online registrations, a copy of the online 'jotter' form can be downloaded here.

Help! I am an implanter and I have forgotten my log-in details to register pets online with Petlog.
We do not hold any implanter usernames and passwords for this service. You will need to contact Petlog directly for these details to be retrieved. Before they can assist you, they will ask for your 5-digit implanter PIN code for security purposes, this can be found on your training certificate, or if you are unsure what your code is you can contact us on 01962 813 554.

What is the ‘backtrack’ system?
When microchips are sold to an implanter, we keep details of when and where every microchip we sell has been sent. This information is also sent to Petlog which means that, if necessary, pets can even be traced before Petlog receives registration details or in cases where registration wasn’t successfully carried out. In a case where a registration has not been processed, Petlog will be able to retrieve information on the implanter the microchip was allocated to. Keeper details can then be obtained via the records that each implanter must keep for each microchip they insert.

Do I need to keep records of all implantations that I carry out?
Yes, this is extremely important. The backtrack system is in place to ensure that if required we can identify when, where and what microchip was implanted into an individual animal, as well as what keeper and animal details were originally registered alongside that microchip on the Petlog database. This information may be required for example in cases where registration wasn’t completed successfully, or incorrect contact details were registered and are needed to help reunite an animal with it’s owner.

Can anyone buy your microchips?
As a member of the Microchip Trade Association, we abide by a code of conduct to only supply microchipping equipment to implanters whom we can verify have been appropriately trained - including meeting the training requirements outlined in any relevant legislation. If we cannot verify this training, then you will not be permitted to purchase microchips from us. We promote the responsible supply of microchips to trained persons only.

What is the minimum number of microchips I can buy?
Our microchips are sold in boxes of 10 - we operate a simple bulk discount pricelist so the more microchips purchased the cheaper the price per microchip. UK implanters can get a significant saving when registering the animals onto the Petlog database online. Once you have been setup with an authorised online account with Petlog it is a very easy process, and we recommend this method of registration. Paper records can still be kept by using our online ‘jotter’ forms available on the downloads page. 

We wish to change over to your microchips - what do we have to do?
If you are a veterinary practice, all we require is your vet PIN code at the time of placing your first order with us.
For any other person, we will need to be able to verify your training at the time of placing your first order with us. 
Once your training has been verified, subsequent orders for microchips and equipment can be made via our website or by phone.

We use another brand of microchips - can we use the 'petDetect' Petlog paper registration forms?
No. Please contact the supplier of your microchips.

I am an Implanter and my address/contact details have changed - whom do I need to inform?
We need to be contacted by phone or email to ensure we keep your delivery address and contact details up to date when processing your orders. We will then notify Petlog of these changes as well so they can update their records. This is also extremely important incase petDetect or Petlog need to contact you for backtrack purposes.
What happens if I misfire a microchip?
We understand how frustrating misfires can be. If implanters misfire a microchip they need to look at their technique, whether the animal was restrained effectively and also check their implant equipment. A misfire on a very rare occasion is understandable, however if implanters are misfiring regularly then do give us a call and we can advise you accordingly about remedying this. Many misfires occur when implanters are using the two part system because the wrong size implanter tool was used with the wrong size microchip, either another manufacturers implanter or a regular implaner for mini microchips and vice versa. Alternatively misfires also commonly occur because the trigger/plunger of the implanter was depressed too early, too late, or the Implanter failed to depress the trigger fully. With some implanters using the gun style tool we see them wrapping fingers around the 'trigger' on the implant gun as they push, if they encounter resistance or movement then this often results in them squeezing the trigger and misfiring. If this is happening, then we recommend switching to the syringe type implanter or the all-in-one format microchips - most vets prefer these.

What is the Chip Fairy?
The Chip Fairy was a microchip replacement service for misfired microchips that was offered by The Pet Chip Company Ltd who traded as pet-detect. A misfire normally occurs due to incorrect implantation technique or inadequate restraint, and whilst the odd misfire may occur very rarely, if you are misfiring on a regular basis we recommend contacting us on 01962 813 554 so we can discuss remedying this.
Please note that from 1st May 2015 this service is no longer offered by petDetect. We would prefer to work with implanters to remedy misfires and prevent them occuring rather than simply offering to replace them.

My sharps box is full - how do I dispose of it legally?
By law a sharps box must be incinerated. You are unable to do this, so please make enquiries with your local council to ask if they offer a sharps drop-off or pick-up service. Alternatively, you can ask any company or clinic that are dealing with needles if they can take yours for disposal. They may ask for a small fee to do this. You can buy a replacement sharps box from a chemist or alternatively we can supply them to you. 

A microchip that I implanted is now not scanning - what do I do?
True mechanical failure of microchips is very rare, many cases of microchips failing to scan are due to scanner errors or incorrect scanning technique. Other possible causes are that the microchip wasn’t successfully implanted in the first instance, or the microchip migrated and was expulsed from the body soon after implantation.
Firstly, ensure that the animal is scanned thoroughly, with two different scanners preferably. For more information on proper scanning technique please click here. If a microchip is still not found and the implantation has only just taken place, scan the floor and table where the implantation took place, and the microchip needle, as the microchip may be found there.
If not found then please contact us on 01962 813 554 for further advice before inserting another microchip. The only way to distinguish whether a microchip has failed or has been expelled from the body is to radiograph or ultrasound the implant area.
